This thesis is a report based on the translation of three chapters excerpted from the Encyclopedia of Language and Education volume 1: Language Policy and Political Issues in Education. The source text focuses on the politics of language---highlighting and foregrounding the importance of the social and the political contexts of language policy and language education, and explored issues such as language planning in education, the relationship between language education, pluralism, citizenship and globalization. The translator made a detailed analysis of the original text based on Reiss‘s text type theory, and categorized it as the informative text. Therefore, Peter Newmark‘s communicative translation approach was used as the strategy for my translation; moreover, the author drew on various skills and techniques for English-Chinese translation to resolve the practical problems that hindered the translation process. The report is made up of four parts:Chapter one is the task description, in which the background information of the source text and the significance of the task was introduced, and it also accounts for the characteristics of the source text. The process description is covered in Chapter two. In this chapter, the preparation for translation, the schedule, the quality control measures and an introduction to the theoretical framework are also included.Chapter three is devoted to case analysis, elaborating on the difficulties encountered during the translation process and various skills and techniques to deal with these difficulties. The concluding chapter summarizes my personal experiences gained after I completed the translation task. Some problems and limitations lurking in the thesis are alsomentioned in this chapter.
