In recent years, the research about Ci Anthology is in the ascendant, and it has received more and more scholars’ attention. Compared with other contemporary mainstream anthologies that put undue emphasis on "Thought must come first and art second" and even "Thought only", Yu Pingbo’s Selection and Explanation of Tang and Song Ci, as a balance of content and art in the1960s, shows his penetrating insights beyond the collective unconsciousness and extraordinary courage without the fear of political interference. Therefore, Selection and Explanation of Tang and Song Ci becomes unique compiler which is distinguished from the contemporary mainstream anthologies. Focusing on the aspects of compiling, features of Ci selection, annotation characteristic, time significance and value, this thesis embarks from the text, and thus makes an overall introduction to this anthology systematically and comprehensively.This thesis is divided into five parts. The first part is introduction, which mainly discusses the development and research outlook of Tang and Song Ci anthology, and the present study situation and insufficiency of Selection and Explanation of Tang and Song Ci.The second part is the main part of the thesis, which proceeds from three chapters to review the research status of Yu Pingbo’s Selection and Explanation of Tang and Song Ci.The first chapter expounds Yu’s life, the origin of Ci, the experience of studying Ci and thoughts of ci, looking forward to achieve "Understand human beings and reflect on society" through the introduction to the writer. This part highlights Yu’s major life experiences and works, and discusses the family academic context and inheritance origin of studying Ci; as for his experience of studying Ci, its content includes the introduction of Ci works and the analysis of Yu’s the main thoughts of Ci. And analyzes the compiling status of Selection and Explanation of Tang and Song Ci, including its historical background, purpose, criterion and style. Differing from the other contemporary universal anthologies with the aims of popularizing knowledge of ci and promoting patriotism, the compiling purpose of Yu’s Selection and Explanation of Tang and Song Ci, which belongs to research-based anthology, is for the reference of the classical literature researchers. The compiling standard is to comprehensively reflect the different style of the Ci school and Ci writers and to compile on the basis of preface, table of contents, author biographies, Ci, and annotation style. And reviews the features of Ci selection, including its general visage, characteristics a. This chapter analyzes the general visage of three volumes of Selection and Explanation of Tang and Song Ci. Through comparison with other contemporary anthologies, it probes further into its broad Ci selection, preference of grace to boldness and devoid of personal preference. Taking anthology as historical background, this part fully reflects the characteristics of Ci selection in evolution process of Tang Song Ci,The second chapter studies the annotation characteristic of Selection and Explanation of Tang and Song Ci, which is discussed from the following three aspects:the annotation language that using classical Chinese mixed with vernacular Chinese, the annotation contents that are reasonably detailed and traditional way of appreciation.The third chapter studies the time significance and value of Selection and Explanation of Tang and Song Ci. It explores the time significance from the perspective of paradigm theory, and points out its reference significance and consultation value on the later anthology compiling. In addition, this part attempts to transplant the classical theory of literature into anthology, and studies the canonization of Selection and Explanation of Tang and Song Ci, which includes the selected Ci works, the canon formation of Ci by annotation as well as the possibilities to become a classic. The last part is the conclusion, which summarizes the characteristics of the Ci selection, annotation, time significance and value of Selection and Explanation of Tang and Song Ci. This part confirms Yu’s courage to stick to his own academic views and not to drift with the current after suffering criticism, and points out the unique value of Selection and Explanation of Tang and Song Ci in a way that is quite different from contemporary anthologies imprinted with serious political thought.
