This report details the English-to-Chinese translation project of the British firesafety standard BS5839-8:2008Fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings.Code of practice for the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of voicealarm systems and discusses all the issues concerning the translation of this document aswell as some of solutions applicable to the translation of documents of similar text type.The report is consisted of three main chapters besides its introduction andconclusions. Chapter1provides a detailed analysis of the source text with respect to textbackground, intention, text type, readership, text style, and characteristics. In Chapter2,the report addresses the issues concerning the process of translating such type of texts.These issues include review of related literature, development of glossary and terms intarget language, target document formatting prior to translation, translation methodsintended to be used, and the way to carry out copyediting and proofreading after thetranslation. The case study in Chapter3discusses the problems and solutions related totranslation, methods to translate passive voice which is prevalent in British Standards, theimportance of the translator’s competence in target language, and a newly developedpractical modular approach to apply dynamic equivalence theory to English-to-Chinesetranslation.
