If translators made many mistakes in the English version of the Chinese historical data, there would also be mistakes in the foreign scholars’ findings, and they have no earthly chance of making a fair evaluation on our history. The English version of the Chinese historical material is a kind of help for both Chinese readers and foreign readers who want to learn foreign languages and know about Chinese culture. It can boost their learning interest and widen their knowledge.The Legends behind the Secret Files (7) is a book on Chinese historical materials, this thesis is about the English translation of the excerpts from the book. The excerpts include the whole part of Xinhai File---the abdication of the Qing emperor and the first1276words of the Rise of Great Powers---Zhou Enlai Rode the Whirlwind in Geneva, the two parts added up to more than ten thousand words. The source text belongs to informative text, and translator applies Skopos theory to the translation. Meanwhile, according to the key points---culture-loaded words and Chinese typical sentence pattern, some translation strategies are used, for example, literal translation, literal translation plus explanation, transliteration plus explanation, free translation and so on. Besides, examples are cited to analyze every translation step.The translation practice improves translator’s theoretical and practical knowledge, making the translator understand skopos theory systematically and providing a practical guide for the translation of the historical text. |
