This is a translation report of On Histories and Stories by A.S. Byatt, a British novelist, poet, literarycritics, of which the Introduction and Chapter one are the source text. The Introduction discusses thedetailed process of the stories and the classic literary works, and its main idea is: the classic literatureshould possess lasting vitality and it should not disappear from the syllabus owing to the passage of timeand the change of political system. The first chapter fathers vividly depicts the relationship betweennarrative works and historical writing, the author’s major opinion is: writing the marginalized, forgottenand never recorded history is the ‘Renaissance’ motivation of historical writings. The main content of thistranslation report consists of four parts. Part one is the translation background, including the contentoverview, the translation purpose and practicability, and the domestic translation status. Part two is theresearch background and theory instruction, including the original analysis, theoretical framework of‘faithfulness, expressiveness, elegance’. Part three is the translation process, including translationpreparation, test and modification, translation difficulties, translation methods. Part four is translationpractice summary, including the importance of the team, translation experience and gains, problems still tobe solved.
