"kan (N) bu VP", a structure frequently used in contemporary Chinese, especially in colloquial Chinese, shows its uniqueness and complexity to a certain extent. In this thesis, firstly the characteristics of the structure is observed and studied in detail, secondly the grammatical and pragmatic features are discussed, then the diachronic evolution and formation mechanism are analyzed and finally the differences between the structure "kan (N) bu VP" and some relevant structures are illustrated as well. The thesis can be mainly divided into four parts:Basing on the observation of the modality mark "kan",the first part illustrate that there are three types of the modality mark "kan" and the word "kan" in the structure "kan (N) bu VP" belongs to different types and manifests its typical pragmatic features according to the different language situations. In the second part,we describe the syntactic forms and semantic features of the structure, which are both multivariant when "N"changes from one personal pronoun to another. We can discover that when "N"is personal pronoun of the first person, the negative adverb "bu"tend to be a redundant component and when "N"is personal pronoun of the second person, the negative adverb "bu" is not likely to be a redundant component. When the "N"is personal pronoun of the third person, situation is more complex, and particularly it can be generalized that whether the negative adverb "bu"is a redundant component depends on the characteristic of the "VP" in the structure.Besides,at times "N"can be a empty category, including elliptical empty category and connotative empty category. The third part can be divided into two parts,in the first of which, the diachronic evolution is analyzed and in the second of which, the motivation of the negative redundancy is investigated in the in terms of phonetics, semantics, pragmatics and language environment. In the fourth part, the similar structures, such as "qiao N bu VP","dang xin/xiao xin/liu shen/zhu yi+bu/bie(bu yao)+VP"are introduced and similarities and differences are also described.
