Research into contemporary black and white woodcut represented by Corning Black and white woodcut in China has experienced a long style change process. In the history of Chinese art, black and white are always used in the traditional Chinese painting. Traditional ink and wash painting in China which takes black and white as the main color, originated from Wang Wei’s "splashed landscape". When black and white are the main colors in Chinese painting history and take the leading role in ancient ink and splash painting, printing making is also quietly breeding. Relatively to artistry, print making plays a more practical role, similar to characters, whose main function is communicating at that time. It has come into a faction in modern time. From black and white woodcut to nowadays’tinted woodcut and the breeding various factions in different places, all these new things seem to have its contingency and inevitability. This is needed when social economy develops into a certain stage and in a way plays an important role in art development.With the integration of western thoughts, traditional woodcut printmaking has been ignored by the public or even completely abandoned. It has infused new ideals and methods on the basis of keeping the thousands of years’cultural accumulation in China. Through setting forth the history of black and white woodcut printmaking development, showing its artistic value and depth, we can let the readers know its artistic appearance in different periods and places, thus more comprehensively knowing the knowledge of this art category and getting interested.The features of print making have determined its limitations. Though there are limitations, with the maturity and openness of people’s minds, print making’s display space is expanding, thus leading to a result that the elements value of print making has surpassed itself. On the surface, this has engraved the way for print making, while in fact, greatly reduced its level. The ultimate way of print making is that, artists convey their inner world to the audiences by real performance and get them empathized.In conclusion, contemporary development of black and white woodcut is urgently needed. This paper researched into Corning’s black and white woodcut, from the black change of which’s creation content, explored that black and white woodcut can also develop into modern times. The paper aims at expressing though print making, especially woodcut print making, has limitations, its particularities determine its uniqueness and irreplaceability, thus calling on artists walking on the artistic way to exert their subjective initiatives to leave a development land for print making. This paper is divided into six chapters:The first chapter, Introduction, describes the central idea of this articleThe second chapter, the main black and white woodcut prints domestic research. Black and white woodcut elaborated China’s development and evolution of its special beauty of language.Chapter Ⅲ study of contemporary black and white woodcut represented in Corning. By Corning and artistic works of analysis, through the art of black and white woodcut made to explore, understand and explore its contemporary development prospects.Chapter Ⅳ, Corning views on a black and white woodcut. Corning elaborate woodcut spirit of contemporary woodcut views Corning development.The fifth chapter, seek common ground-compared with other contemporary black and white woodcut printmaker and Corning woodblock prints. By other contemporary woodcut printmaker and Corning black and white woodcut compare, understand contemporary black and white woodcut of roads are in the transformation and development.Chapter Ⅵ, on Corning talk about my views and understanding of contemporary woodcut.
