Translation Study And The Translation Strategies Of Semantically Fuzzy Adverbs In Dawn Blossoms Plucked At Dusk From The Perspective Of Pragmatic Functions

The indefiniteness of the objective world, the indefiniteness of language and human thoughts make language fuzzy semantically. In translation, it is inevitable for translators to meet semantic fuzziness. With the popularity of semantic fuzziness theory in translation study, it is becoming more and more significant in linguistic studies, and translation researchers gradually tend to make a study of translating semantic fuzziness from the perspective of pragmatic function. This thesis makes a case study of the translation of adverbs in Zhao Hua Xishi. Since Down Blossoms Plucked at Dusk translated by Yang Xianyi and Lady Gladys is successful in C-E translation with the semantic fuzziness of adverbs reproduced successfully, this thesis explores the C-E translation of adverbs in dealing with semantic fuzziness from the perspective of pragmatic function to find the translation strategies.This thesis first introduces semantic fuzziness theory with the various explanations, the features and the pragmatic function of semantic fuzziness as well as the pragmatic function of adverbs with semantic fuzziness. Next, it studies the definition, the classification, the origin, the attribute and the translatability of adverbs. Last, the study of C-E adverb translation is further narrowed down to one aspect, that is, the semantic functions of adverbs. According to the pragmatic function, adverbs can be further classified into speculative adverbs, adversative adverbs, general adverbs, degree adverbs, round adverbs, predicative adverbs, and culture-loaded adverbs.The author suggests two strategies, namely, fuzziness retention and fuzziness reduction to deal with semantic fuzziness in translation process. Furthermore, the author finds the correspondent and useful methods to translate adverbs to deal with semantic fuzziness from the perspective of pragmatic fuzziness through detailed analyses of the typical examples. Under the guidance of fuzziness reduction, there are the translation methods as adding corresponding fuzzy-restriction, omitting words unequivalent semantic fuzziness, adding explicit words, semantic paraphrase and constituent conversion. And under the guidance of fuzziness retention, there are translation methods as reproducing implicit adverbs, modification plus literal translation, referential translation and omission of redundant fuzzy adverbs. To conclude, in the process of translation, the translator should take the semantic fuzziness into consideration on the basis of flexibility in choosing the best collocation.
