Noun takes the priority in Chinese vocabulary teaching as a second language. Noun isone of the three main notional words in Chinese, it spreads widely in vocabulary. At thesame time, it has a very high using frequency. In terms of syntax, nouns play an essentialrole in sentence. Meanwhile, nouns can also be used as combinations with nouns, verbs,adjectives, numerals, prepositions and a variety of phrases. Therefore, the study of nounshas a significant meaning of Chinese teaching as a foreign language, especially invocabulary and grammar teaching.In this paper, we choose Chinese Proficiency Vocabulary and Character Level Outline(HSK Outline) as comparing objects, select the representative textbooks of widespread use:Liu Xun’s New Practical Chinese Reader and Wuhui Hua’s Developing Chinese(Comprehensive course), and take an exhaustive measurement and statistical, made nounvocabulary and co-occurrence vocabulary of HSK Outline and two sets of textbooksseparately. We also compared the nouns in terms of quantity and distribution.Compared to each set of textbooks, in terms of the quantity of received nouns and itsdistribution, the quantity ascends progressively from beginner to advanced level in NewPractical Chinese Reader, while in Developing Chinese, the quantity in beginner andintermediate level are almost the same, however, in advanced level, the quantity decreasedrelatively.Also, the percentage of category words is small.Compared to HSK Outline, in the aspects of received nouns, the trend of quantity inNew Practical Chinese Reader keeps consistent with HSK Outline. The proportion of nounin total levels is higher than in HSK Outline. The trend of quantity in Developing Chinese takes the opposite side against HSK Outline, and the proportion of noun in total levels islower than in HSK Outline.Through a comparative study, this paper argues that the textbooks of ChineseTeaching as a Second Language should attach importance to vocabulary choosing, wordtagging, as well as the difficulty of the chosen vocabulary which are.In this paper, we proposed some principles and methods of noun teaching in Chineseteaching as a second language.
