A Report On Translation Of Chinese News Into English At Hunan Official Web Portal

With the increasing exchange and propaganda of China, government Englishwebsites have emerged. As the main means of external information transformation,news translation is attracting more and more interest from the society. Hunanprovincial English website (http://www.enghunan.gov.cn), as the first batch ofdomestic government English website at provincial level, has significant referencevalue to news translation.In the process of translating Chinese news into English, the translator’sunderstanding of English news has a profound impact on the translation. Based on theauthor’s news translation practice at Hunan Official Web Portal from July2013toMarch2014, this essay focuses on analyzing such issues of translating headline,culture-loaded words and sentence patterns through rich examples. In addition, theauthor suggested the principles and standards of news translation, and summarized thestrategies and skills when dealing with the above issues.News translation should follow certain principles.1) The theme in newstranslation should be prominent.2) Attention should be paid to accuracy andefficiency. The author also summarized three commonly used methods in translatingChinese news into English.1) Adding background information.2) Adding paraphrase.3) Deleting certain words or rewriting.The main task of translating Chinese news is to transforming informationaccurately and efficiency. The translator sho ulders significant social responsibility.Accuracy is the core of news language while efficiency is the requirement of newstranslation. Therefore, the news translator must have comprehensive knowledge ofboth target language and source language.
