The Application Of Active Omission As A Strategy In E-C Simultaneous Interpreting

In the assessment of interpreting quality, omission has always been considered as aresult of information loss or deletion. However, due to the particularity of simultaneousinterpreting (SI), researchers have noticed that the strategy of “saying it all” cannot beachieved. Once the interpreter attempts to interpret the sentence or words literally one byone, the difficulty in SI will bring him much more mistakes in interpreting. Based on thisfact as well as the economy principle in linguistics, the author proposes that omission canbe used as a strategy in SI in order to achieve the communicative purpose of theinterpreting activity.Data in case studies is selected from SI videos on the Internet, and the analysis focuseson the universality and inevitability of omission in SI with proper suggestions in how toapply omission as a strategy in the case examined. Causes and types of omission aresummarized through the case study and the sorts of information that has no significanteffect on the quality of interpreting are concluded. In accordance of the results, activelyomitting of the minor and unnecessary information helps to reduce the passive omission ofthe important and key information of the speech. After the case study, the author draws aconclusion that appropriate usage of omission saves the energy of interpreters in theproduction with important and key information successfully transmitted, without affectingthe quality of interpreting the original text, which achieved the purpose of SI.Hence, it is concluded by the author that interpreters should actively apply omission asa strategy in SI to save energy and time: comprehending the messages received and activelyomit the minor important information to secure the interpretation of those important parts.Active omission can be used as a strategy in SI for the reason that it helps to better theoverall performance of the interpreter with high quality output.
