Many scholars, home and abroad, have conducted a large number of researches and explorations on interpretation. Plenty of theoretical achievements as well as practical experience have been obtained. In this report, I have tried to conduct an objective and detailed study of omission techniques in simultaneous interpretation. Examples will be presented after the relevant theory is introduced.Besides, I would like to notify that I mainly focus on the performance of student interpreters, in other words, beginners instead of experienced professionals. The materials selected are ten speeches from A Coursebook of Simultaneous Interpreting(authored by Zhong Weihe and Zhan Cheng), five English speeches and five Chinese ones are included. I have transcribed recordings of my own interpretation and used them as examples to analyze relevant omission techniques. The transcripts, I hope, would be helpful in a more direct way. Another important aspect analyzed in the report is passive omission, which is different from omission techniques that interpreters normally use as strategies. For student interpreters, passive omission is common and inevitable. However, there are only a few, if not none, researches can be found regarding to this aspect. Hence, I believe discussions about passive omission would be not only constructive but indeed necessary. In the report, it is expected to work out feasible techniques to deal with both active and passive omission, and more importantly, how to transform the passive omission into active one. It should enable inexperienced interpreters as well as non-English-major learners to improve the interpreting performance, and to be adept at using omission techniques in practice.
