The purpose of the thesis is to explore the application of omission strategy in Chinese to English(C-E)consecutive interpreting.Previous studies on omission have analyzed its causes, categorization, and rationality in interpretation.Based on the previous research, this thesis further demonstrates the effectiveness of omission strategy in Chinese to English consecutive interpretation with comparative studies. Moreover,it illustrates how to employ omission strategy in an appropriate manner.A case study of a consecutive interpretation done by the author is also included to substantiate the arguments of the thesis. The arguments of the thesis can be summarized as follows: To adopt omission strategy,an interpreter should present meaning instead of words and focus on communication instead of “translation completeness”.In C-E consecutive interpretation,it is necessary to omit meaningless segments such as category words, repetitive information, and selectively present the important information in challenging situations.Given the challenges and difficulties of interpreting,it is of practical significance to study strategic omission. Moreover, desirable omission can help save time and efforts, avoid Chinglish and misunderstanding, and enhance the quality and efficiency of interpretation. Therefore, omission strategy, which is conducive to both interpreters and the audience,is worth studying. And this thesis wishes to provide useful supplement to the current research.
