Lalo, Edouard-Victor-Antoine (1823-1892) is a distinguished French composer in the19th century. Though he do not has a large amount of works in his life time, most of which are of high quality, especially the instrumental music which possesses supreme art value. As one of the founders of the Societe Nationale de Musique, under the circumstances of instrumental music creation’s underappreciation, Lalo works hard and leads the younger generation to make French instrumental art shining again. Lalo pushes the development of French romantic string music in19th century with his practical action. His excellent works and brilliant contribution win the title of "master of instrumental music " for him.Among all Lalo’s works, his only cello concerto is an uncommon masterpiece. As a classical work of concerto in the period of romanticism, it plays an important role in the cello concertos. For cello learners, the popularity of this concerto even surpasses his most famous work Symphonie espagnole. The Concerto in D Minor was composed in1877and become a long-lasting record in cello music. Lalo, as a Cellist, shows his proficiency of cello in his production. This thesis aims at analyzing the style and characteristic of this work and trying to explore its cause.There are three chapters in this thesis. Chapter one is a general introduction of Lalo and his works、historical and cultural background、social music at that time. Chapter Two analyzes musical noumenon of this concerto from the aspects of music theme, musical structure and unique hispanic elements. Based on the noumenon analysis in Chapter Two, Chapter Three explores the factors of its style, mainly from the aspects of nationalism, exoticism and aesthetics, and the author puts forward her understandings on the style of this concerto in the final.
