Stiff:The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers is a popular science book written by Mary Roach, an American author and journalist. This report is based on the translation practice of the Eighth Chapter of this book. Popular science readings are not only conductive to the popularization of scientific and technological knowledge, but also essential for enhancing people’s interests in science. The introduction and translation of excellent popular science works can promote China’s cultural exchange with the rest of the world, and inject fresh energy to the popular science market in China.This report consists of five chapters. Chapter One briefly introduces the translation project, including the translation process and background of the task. Features of popular science works are analyzed in this chapter.Chapter Two mainly analyzes writing style and linguistic features of this book.Chapter Three briefly introduces the development of Skopos theory and three rules of Skopos theory-the Skopos rule, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule.In Chapter Four, based on three rules of the Skopos theory, the author summarizes three principles-principle of reader-orientation, principle of accuracy, and principle of consistency in style which should be followed in the translation of popular science works.Chapter Five explores proper translation methods for the translation of measure words and medical terms, under the guidance of the Skopos theory, principle of reader-orientation, principle of accuracy, and principle of consistency in style;meanwhile, the significance of punctuation in translation is emphasized and discussed.
