A Report On Popular Science Translation Of Evolving: The Human Effect And Why It Matters Based On Dynamic Equivalence Theory

This Paper is a report on the translation of Chapter I and Chapter II of Evolving: The Human Effect and Why It Matters written by Daniel J.Fairbanks.Popular science,as a branch of science and technology(S&T)writings,is meant to educate and equip the public with scientific knowledge.With scientific,literary,popular and interesting attributes,it may pose unexpected difficulties to translators in the process of translation.In addition,popular science is targeted to popularize scientific knowledge,and therefore it should take readers' feelings into account in the process of translation.In this translation practice,the author adopts Eugene A.Nida's dynamic equivalence theory,which not only focuses on the meaning of the source text but also takes the target readers' response into consideration.Furthermore,Nida has put forward a set of translation procedures,as a part of the dynamic equivalence theory,to guide a translator to achieve the criteria of dynamic equivalence in translation.The translation procedures include four stages.The first stage is to analyze the surface structure of the source text.The second stage is to transfer the analyzed material from the source language to the target language.During the process of transfer,some translation strategies such as redistribution of semantic components,adjustment of word and phrase order etc.are adopted.The third stage is to restructure the translation in terms of the style of the source text and so forth.The fourth stage is to test the translation and check whether the translation has met the criteria of dynamic equivalence.In every stage,Nida provides translators concrete methods that can be applied in the process of translation.The author of this paper mainly probes into the practical application of the dynamic equivalence theory in this translation practice.It is proved that dynamic equivalence theory has a strong applicability in resolving difficulties in translation of literary sentences,long sentences,professional terms,and so forth.Therefore,the author of this paper considers that dynamic equivalence theory plays a guiding role in this translation practice.
