On The Application Of Explicitation Strategy In The Translation Of Monkeyluv:And Other Essays On Our Lives As Animals

Explicitation means turning the implicit into the explicit.In studies of translation,it was first defined by French scholars Vinay and Darbelnet in 1958 as "to make explicit in the target language what is implicit but can be inferred from the source language".Later scholars have verified the explicitation hypothesis and then expanded the definition and strategies of explicitation through case and corpus-based studies.The material used for analysis in this thesis is the translation of two chapters from Monkeyluv:And Other Essays on Our Lives as Animals,a book focusing on popular science written by Robert Morris Sapolsky,a well-known professor in biology and neurology from Stanford University.The author of the book analyzes the relationship between human beings and gene,body and society in a vivid way.Rich knowledge of medicine,biology and culture in the book pose a challenge to average readers of different cultural backgrounds from the author.In addition,complicated sentences in the source language pose another challenge and require readers to read several times and put in the context to understand.The thesis applies the method of textual analysis to discuss the phenomenon and strategies of explicitation used in the translation of this material.Explicitation strategies are analyzed respectively from the aspects of vocabulary,sentence,discourse and context,including the use of simile to translate metaphors,replacement of abstract words with concrete words;reorganization of sentence structures and combination of more than one sentences into one;addition of cohesive words,clarification of personal references and pronouns;and addition of explicit meaning and background information,as well as explaination of culture-loaded words.
