| The report is based on the translation of section four to seven in "Part III Communications in the Sui, Tang and Song Dynasties" of History of China s Communications by Bai Shouyi, including metropolises, external communications and means, posthouses and traffic laws and decrees. The text can be classified into three types:poems, laws and classical novels. So different methods have been taken to deal with these and corresponding theories have been referred:Fu Lei’s theory of "Spiritual resemblance" and Qian Zhongshu’s principle of "transmigration", Eugene A Nida’s theory of "Functional equivalence" and "law of translation unified". All these theories are exploited for cultural exchanges.This translation work is finished to introduce Chinese culture to the world. At the same time, taking translation as a way of cultural communication, this report proposes difficulties and problems such as the translation of culture-loaded and semantic gap words with corresponding application of specific translation skills, the search and proper use of parallel texts and translator’s involvement with some suggestions provided. This translation aims to let the readers get the same feeling as the original language readers.Studies on translation of poems and laws have already existed, but the research on the translation of the kind of comprehensive historical books like History of China’s Communications is new in domestic now. This report is an integration of the theories on translating of the three types of texts. The translation is finished to introduce the prosperous situation of the Sui, Tang and Song dynasties to readers. In addition, the folkway and politics were opening at that time, especially in the Tang Dynasty, which attracted lots of businessmen to trade in China. It can be found in classical works of literature. So some other foreign languages of surrounding countries like Japanese are involved in the translation, which should be transliterated at most of time. |
