Relevance theory is not only a cognitive principle of communication, but also an ostensive-inferential cognitive process guiding the translation. In the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, subtitle translation is not only beautiful and fluency, but also the key to success. Until today, the scholars’theories can not meet the need of the translation to guide their translating activities. Presently the studies in both China and abroad tend to be strategic, and from the perspective of aesthetic and cross-culture. There are not enough studies from optimal relevance of relevance theory perspective on subtitles translation.Based on the above research status, this thesis utilizes the relevance theory to analyze and discuss the subtitle translation in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. After doing many multi-angle, multi-level, large-scale researches, scholars who are engaged in the study of cognitive pragmatics, find that relevance theory has a more and more important effect on people’s cognitive and communicative activities and language inferences. Since Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon has been translated into English, researchers conducted plenty of translation study from different perspectives. Relevance theory becomes more and more popular during these perspectives, and also provides a new perspective for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon study.This thesis chooses Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon as the linguistic data, mainly because, as the pinnacle of Ang Lee work which has been got most attention and criticism when it came out, but many scholars mainly from the perspective of cross-culture and aesthetics to study it, few of them studied it from relevance theory. By analyzing the translations of James Schamus, this thesis applies relevance theory to analyze the subtitle translation in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and draws a conclusion that the methods of subtitle translation on the existing current version:omission, substitution, addition, literal translation, and condensation; there are also existing problems lies in three aspects: the translator, the unity of subtitle translation and the screen and the translation of culture-loaded words in dialogues. At last, the author comes to the conclusion that Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is evoked resonance of the audiences around the world. Its success can be considered as the success of spreading culture and communication.
