Tourism industry is closely related with economy and culture. With the rapid development of Chinese economy, the status of Chinese tourism industry has gained more and more attention in the world. Since Chinese culture is profound and many attractions concentrate the essence of local culture, the translation of tourism text from Chinese to English bears the burden of spreading Chinese culture to foreign tourists and its importance is evident. Tourism text translation of high quality can not only excavate the deep Chinese culture and attract more foreign tourists to understand Chinese culture, but also promote the development of local tourism industry.Jef Verschueren holds that in his Adaptation Theory language using is a process of making choices. The reason that language can make correct choices lies in that there are three natural features for language:variability, negotiability and adaptability. Verschueren holds that there are four aspects or angles for language adaptability:the contextual correlates of adaptability, the structural objects of adaptability, the dynamics of adaptability, and the salience of the adaptation processes. Based on Jef Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory, the author will analyze the application to the process of tourism text translation from four angles.The objectives of this thesis lie in:to analyze the application of Adaptation Theory in the process of tourism translation from four angles; to expound the application of active adaptation and passive adaptation in the aspect of culture adaptation for contextual correlates of adaptability; to foster people’s understanding for the tourism text translation based on Adaptation Theory at the theoretical level and be expected to provide some guidance for tourism text translation. The author will classify the collected samples and then analyze the process of tourism text translation from Chinese to English in the framework of the Adaptation Theory. In this thesis, on one hand, the author will analyze the process of tourism text translation from four angles but not one angle (the contextual correlates of adaptability) or two angles (contextual correlates of adaptability and the structural objects of adaptability) as other researchers did. And each angle will be divided into specific dimensions which accord with what Verschueren has expounded in his original work of Understanding Pragmatics. On the other hand, the author will analyze the process of tourism text translation from the aspects of active adaptation and passive adaptation.This thesis aims at pointing out the feasibility and availability of conveying the cultural information in tourism text translation under the guidance of the Adaptation Theory. On the other hand, the author hopes that this study can evoke more researchers to create more high-quality translation in tourism text translation field.
