The past few years have witnessed an increasing number of academic lectures held all over the world. With professional contents, unfamiliar terms and complicated expressions, long sentences in such lectures may be rather difficult for interpreters to deal with. The study case of this thesis is one of the Human Resource Management Lectures of New Jersey Institute of Technology, in which some typical long sentences will be picked out for analysis.Interpretive Theory emphasizes the sense equivalence. According to this theory, it is the ideas that are supposed to be translated rather than the words or the phrases. Interpretive Theory is well-known for its triangle mode:understanding-deverbalization-expression. All those ideas play a crucial role in guiding the interpretation of long sentences from English to Chinese. Also, based on the results of previous studies by various scholars, the features of long English sentences are summarized. After that, five interpreting strategies are discussed and each strategy is illustrated with detailed examples. The last part is about the author’s reflection on the whole task. It is hoped that this case study can help to cope with similar difficulties interpreters may encounter in the future.
