A Practice Report On Interpreting Strategies For Long Sentences In Consecutive Interpreting From The Perspective Of Interpretive Theory

Recently, under the international background of informatization, the press conference has become an important platform and effective means for communication and exchanges, it is also one of important ways for the foreign journalists to know more about China. Nowadays, various kinds of press conferences in various mega cities of China have arouse wide attention of the whole world., thus the role of the interpreters at the press conference is more critical than before. As the press conference has the characteristics of orality, affected by the speech manner of the spokesman, there are many complex sentence structures. Sometimes, the spokesman may repeat some points and contents, so the sentences are not rigorous in logic and the words are in disorder. Moreover, consecutive interpreting has the characteristics of immediacy, which will lead to the incompleteness and inaccuracy in the press conference. These all affect the quality of the target language to some extent. Therefore, it is particularly important to conduct the interpretation research on long sentences in press conference.This practice report chooses the Press Conference of Beijing Economic and Social Development Achievements in 2014 as the interpreting task to conduct consecutive interpreting. The paper analyses the differentiation of Chinese and English sentence structure and the problems of long sentences in consecutive interpreting and puts forward some specific interpretation strategies according to the interpretive theory. It can be helpful to add a subject when we understand the source language and the sense groups should be taken into several parts and the information can be recombined to make the sentences clear and logical during the process of deverbalization. Moreover, simplifying the sentences is an important skill in making the sentences more concise and easy to understand and some logical connectives can be used to make the sentences more fluent. Sometimes, the interpreter should use some words to express the emotional attitude of the spokesman if necessary.In conclusion, it is very important to have a deep understanding of the interpretive theory and it is really necessary to master the differentiation of Chinese and English sentence structure in a comprehensive way when doing the practice in Chinese-English interpretation. At the same time, it can be a helpful skill to adopt some suitable methods to solve the interpretation problems of long sentences. By analyzing the interpreting practice, the paper is designed to provide some useful references to long sentences of press conference interpreting.
