The topic of this translation report comes from translating Testing for LanguageTeachers written by an English writer Arthur Hughes, which is one of the books andtutorials designed for language teachers published by Cambridge University Press.Testing for Language Teachers has16chapters. Among them,3chapters,12000wordsincluding chapter Twelve (Listening Test), chapter Thirteen (Grammatical Test) andchapter Fourteen (Comprehensive Test) are translated.Based on full understanding and analysis of the material which needs to betranslated, this report demonstrates how to reach linguistic equality for words andsentences by various translation methods under the principle of Functional EquivalenceTheory put forward by Eugene Nida. The purpose of this principle is to realize thelogical sequence according to the features of target language in order to make it morenatural and fluent without hindering the understanding of the original message. Thisreport is divided into four sections. The first section introduces the task of thetranslation including the significance, goals and structure of the report. The second partfocuses on background information of the source material including the author of thebook, introductions of the selected parts, preparation work on this report and difficultiesin translation. Part three discusses theories and methods used in this translation and thewhole process of translation under the guidance of these theories and methods. The lastpart summarizes the experiences got in the translation and understanding of theprinciple of Functional Equivalence.
