A Project Report On The E-C Translation Of The Patent Specification

As globalization is increasingly deepening,the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative has driven the enthusiasm of enterprises for patent application,the patent translation industry has entered a stage of rapid growth.Patent specification features relatively fixed terminology and onefold structure.Therefore,many experts in this field choose machine translation,which,however,faces defects such as translation errors and improper logic.Since patent translation involves a large number of technical terms,in order to avoid conflicts of responsibility,people basically use the method of literal translation.That means unreasonable and illogical sentences will occur,which is difficult for readers to understand and emerges as obstacles to the promotion and popularization of science and technology.When the author was a processing intern of patent translation template in Nanjing Yunzai Shangque Information Technology Co.,Ltd.from August 2018,she gained some understanding of the modes of patent translation:This report selects two scientific patent specifications as the research objects from Innojoy,one patent engine,relating to Lining of a Cathode Assembly of a Reduction Cell for Production of Aluminum,Method for Installation Thereof and Reduction Cell Having Such Lining and Techniques for Calculation of Quantization Matrices in Video Coding which total up to over 1,4000 characters.The author analyzes major issues and difficulties including technical terms,semi-technical terms,ancient words,long,difficult sentences and discourse.Based on genre analysis theory,the author finds specific solutions:literal translation is applied to technical terms,free translation to semi-technical terms and segmentation to ancient words;linear translation,reversion,separation and insertion are employed to long,difficult sentences;amplification of explicit logical words and repetition are utilized to keep the discourse coherent.Finally,the author hopes that this project report can offer diversified solutions to patent translation,smoothing people’s understanding to the similar texts and giving some references to others.
