Report On English-to-Chinese Translation Of Patent Specification

With the development of modern society,science,technology and information are the essential development force for the growth of each country.As various new technologies and inventions emerge in an endless stream,people have realized the importance of patent which not only protects intellectual property but also be granted the function of information reference and communication.Ownership of patents is the necessary prerequisite for enterprises to declare projects of hi-tech enterprises and innovation funds.This thesis is based on the author's internship experience as a translator at LHIPS Limited Company in Chengdu of Sichuan province in China.The translated documents were mainly about specific Intellectual Property information of patent specification in English and the translators' task was to translate those English patent specifications into Chinese.Patent specification has similar characteristics with technology and legal texts,so based on Text Typology Theory put forward by Peter Newmark,this paper identifies the source texts as informative function texts,and introduces different translation strategies,namely semantic and communicative translation.According to the two translation strategies,the author gives an analysis on translation methods such as diction,omission,voice conversion,word order adjustment,division,lexical cohesion,and grammatical cohesion from the level of lexicon,syntax and discourse.Furthermore,by analyzing the actual cases,the author solved various problems,especially unfamiliar terms and complicated sentences,in the process of translation.Chapter One introduces the translation task of this report;Chapter Two describes the specific process of translation;Chapter Three identifies the text type of source texts on the basis of the guiding theory and puts forward the translation strategies;Chapter Four introduces the translation methods by analyzing cases;Chapter Five summarizes the translation methods and deficiencies,which is hoped to provide references to similar types of texts.
