In the process of cultural communication between China andWest,Although Chinese academic have been focusing too much enthusiam onintroducing western modern literary theories than on interpret Chinese literarythought to western world,it is still a important component that Chinese literarythought is interpreted into the western world.With the increasing of translation onChinese culture and classical literary works,the uniqueness of Chinese literary ideaand thought receive much attention by western world.After long time translationand research of single works on Chinese literary thought, overall research begun totake shape in the western world since the last half of the20th century.Readings inChinese literary thought written by Stephen Owen is a excellent book in thiscurrent,which he spent12years to complish and began to write in the1970s.thework involves translation and reasearch on21Chinese literary thought works fromthe pre-Qin period to Qing dynasty,among which the writer spent most of the energyon Wen-hsin tiao-lung.the work has been translated into English in2002.The article Takes Stephen Owen’s Readings in Chinese literary thought asmain object of study,adopts theories on Hermeneutics and translatology as mainmethods of study,combined with the document literature written in chinese andEnglish.The dissertation start from a review on Stephen Owen’s life and his works onSinology,and then moves to the Detailed Study on Readings in Chinese literarythought. In the first place,I try to grasp the whole text content and structure inmacro-perspective,define its important status in American academic and make areview on the previous researches.Then I decided that Wen-hsin tiao-lung to be mycase study.I try to explore and analyse Stephen Owen’s choice and balance betweendomesticating translation and foreignizing translation from the difference betweenthe original work and translated text,and explore the untranslatability of classic byanalyse difference of aesthetic style between it.Then from the perspective of CreativeTreason put forward by French literary sociologist Robert Escarpit,I analysisedStephen Owen’s creative interpretation in the course of translating Wen-hsin tiao-lung from both the macro and micro dimensions.In the same time,I try tocompare the translation of terms between the translation works of Stephen Owenand Vincent Yu-chung Shih,Highlighting Stephen Owen’creative interpretation;I alsodistinguish his over-interpretation of two levels between translation of words andinterpretation of meaning.At last,this article analysised sinologist StephenOwen’unique contributions on methodology and research perspective in thecourse of translation and interpretation Chinese literary thought under the foreignlanguage and cultural environment, pointed out his shortage in the misreading oftranslation and simplification of interpretation.
