A Report On Graduation Project

Three articles have been selected for the English-to-Chinese translation project, i.e.,1)"Can One Man Save American Business";2)"Living a Lie";3)"Lessons for Living". The first article discusses the developments in the U.S. business sector. It features Columbia University professor Hitendra Wadhwa, who teaches the course, Personal Leadership and Success, at the school. It claims that Wadhwa teaches two world views, namely, the material advancement as espoused by the U.S. and the spiritual wealth advanced by other cultures like India. The author of "Living a Lie" contends that a little self-deception can be good for individuals but it can have devastating consequences when it comes to core challenges of adult life. The author shares the stories of four people who successfully overcame self-deception in their career, finances, sexual identity and marriage. Through these true stories, the author analyses the psychological motivation of people under similar circumstances. The third article looks at principles for living, loving and playing well with other people. It advises people to fix themselves when they cannot fix the ones they love. It warns about the effect of parents who hover over their children to keep them safe and fulfilled. In addition, the article suggests not to protect maturing children from stress.One of the main difficulties of the translation is to keep fidelity without becoming yoked by the original on the one hand, and to keep the Chinese version being readable on the other hand. In the part of critical commentary, some major problems encountered about words and expressions and their solutions are presented. the analysis and explanation are focused on words and expressions. This part demonstrates the original text and the first translation, and then the problems of the first translation are analyzed. Finally, the modified translation is presented. The examples are about semantic extension, specificity and generality, and translationese of words and expressions.
