Adult Development is a psychological book written by Susan Krauss Whitbourne. According to the latest researches, the book covers content on features of physiology, feeling, memory, intelligence, personality, family and work, and makes the developmental features stand out. The comprehensive content of adults development can help people understand the changes they encounter or will encounter. China is facing the problem of aging and no Chinese version of the book is found in existence. Therefore, the project exerts social and academical significance. The selected material consists of the seventh chapter and the former part of the eighth chapter. It focuses on personality development. The seventh chapter introduces the personality development in middle adulthood around several measurement methods and makes analyses and conclusion. And the eighth chapter turns to personality development of the old age. Due to the professional material, the source text is to some extent difficult so that some problems appear during translation, among which problems of long and complicated sentences and the semantic extension are predominant. The translation report focuses on semantic extension with additional analyses of long sentences by case study. By virtue of making clear of independent clause and division, long and complicated sentences are successfully solved. The underlying meanings of ordinary words are interpreted through context and collocation of words. Thus the successful representation of the source language is realized. Some implications are given and expected to be reference for translators in dealing with similar translation problems.
