Based on one of the Project Gutenberg--English-Chinese translation of science fiction Metropolis, this paper puts the cultural translation theory into practice and brings forward several principles of science fiction translation accordingly. As a science fiction, the language of Metropolis is featured by scientificity and rich imagination; while the content is deeply influenced by background and ideology at that time. Thus how to understand the content thoroughly and how to dig the true meaning of the writer become the major issues and difficulties. To find a solution, the author makes an in-depth research on the content and background, and translates the source text with special translation strategy and skills. According to the cultural translation theory, translation shouldn’t be restrained to itself but should be treated as a cultural development strategy. Besides, since the cultural development is restricted by a series of factors such as ideology, patronage and poetics and so on, translators should pay great attention to these factors. Also, translators must take initiative and follow the principles and skills for science fiction translation:literariness, alienation and cognition.
