With the rapid development of modern science and technology, visual artcorrespondingly stands on the center of the market stage, especially for the perceptualform with images today. The development of the film and television art comes tounprecedented prosperity. For hundreds of years, literature keeps providing nutritions for itconstantly. The adaptation to a classic novel is no doubt a new challenge to a director or ascreenwriter.In the process of film adaptation, the director plays the role of “author” temporarily. Tothe director, the novel maybe just the accumulation of materials, it’s replacement andprocessing that makes it reach the effect of film and television. There must be some limitingfactors in the process of the film adaptation, so that it can not restore to the originalcompletely, all these will cause large quantities of rewriting. In the meanwhile, the voice“adaptation is much worse than original” often appears in the field of film critics. Theysuggest the adapted works cannot show the real connotation of the original. To the adaptation,what we have to recognize from another angle is that the adaptation is not just a simple copyto the original.This paper will analyze this problem from the following chapters:The first chapter considers from the relationship between film and literature, discussingthe interaction of the two forms, investigates a dialectical way to treat film adaptation,illustrates the status and limiting factors of film adaptation as well.The second chapter makes a comparison between the novel and the original, analyzes thechanges and differences of film style from the transformation of subjects、chronos、manner ofnarration、characteristics in details.The third chapter studies the way of Zhang Yimou’s adaptation and the process oftransition from language art to audiovisual art, focusing the additions and deletions, as wellas the embedding art elements perceived from the film Alive.The research of novel and film adaptation is conducive to the coexisting of both novelsand films. The film adaptation will bring a lasting prosperity.
