| This report, based on the translation of the Introduction, Part One1-4and Part Two8-10of The Artful Parent: Simple Ways to Fill Your Family’s Life with Art and Creativity(The Artful Parent, the same as below), is an introduction to the translation task, aresearch and summary of its process and a conclusion as well.The report consists of five parts: Introduction, Chapter I: description of thetranslation task, Chapter II: description of the translation process, Chapter III: analysis onthe translation cases and Conclusion.Introduction includes introduction to the translation material and the author. TheArtful Parent is a guidebook for parents and teachers who want to encourage theirchildren’s creativity through art. It is filled with all kinds of art activities as well asinformation to inspire and guide parents as they make art a priority in their family life.The author, Jean Van’t Hul, graduated from Wellesley College with a major in art historyand studio art, and worked in various art and nonprofit fields before devoting her time towriting and raising kids. She loves to share her art and joyful learning opportunities withher own daughters and through her children’s art groups, her magazine articles, and onher blog. She believes in process-oriented art for children, especially younger children.This means that the process of the art making is more important than the end product, andthat the art is ultimately open-ended and child-directed.Chapter I and Chapter II introduces the whole task, which involves features of thesource text, the significance and value of the translation task, the theories applied intranslation, and the implement of the translation process. In the translation process, HansVermeer’s Skopostheorie and Peter Newark’s semantic translation and communicativetranslation theories are applied to the translation practice. Any form of translationalbehavior, including translation itself, can be regarded as a behavior which always has apurpose. Moreover, a behavior will lead to a result, a new situation or event, or may besomething new. Semantic translation attempts to render, as closely as the semantic andsyntactic structures of the second language allow, the exact contextual meaning of theoriginal. Whereas communicative translation attempts to produce on its readers an effectas close as possible to that obtained on the readers of the original.Chapter III is the core of the report, which is based on the translation of The Artful Parent. In this part, text features are analyzed, translation strategies are discussed, andtranslation methodology is studied. Last but not least, problems, difficulties as well asmistakes are summarized.Conclusion part is to summarize translation strategies of non-literature translation.The translator’s insight and reward is so great that she believes that in the translationprocess, besides skillfulness in translation strategies, it is necessary for the translator tomaster art terms and art-related information. Only in this way, can the translator createhigh-quality translation. |
