This is a report on the translation of Chapter Eight “Individual language learners:some differences” in An Introduction to Foreign Language Learning and Teaching, abook on language learning and education by Keith Johnson. This chapter is mainlyconcerned with the differences of the language learners: cognitive and effectivevariables, some researches about these two variables and the research results. The bookis an educational text. Its translation belongs to non-literary translation with strongprofessional and practical characteristics.The body of this translation project report mainly includes four parts. The first partof the report is on the introduction to the translation project, which is made up of theproject background, significances, objectives and the structure of the report. Thesecond part is the analysis of the author and the original text, which focuses on theanalysis of Chapter Eight. The third part is the key body of the project. It includes thepreparations before translation, the introduction to the translation theory and thedifficulties and their solutions. The author uses Newmark’s theory of text typology toguide the specific difficulties. Through the analysis of the text, Chpate Eight bears thecharacterisctics of informative text and according to Newmark, communicativetranslation is used for informative text. During the process of translation, the authortries to let the target text bear the most faithful meaning of the original under the ruleof communicative translation. In the fourth part, the author’s experience from thistranslation is the main topic and the author also puts forward the issues that need to bedealt with.This translation lays a solid foundation for improving the author’s theoreticalknowledge and translation ability. And at the same time, the author also realizes that translation is an arduous work, which calls for more profoud theoretical knowledgeand practical ability to make further progress.
