The development of modern science and technology brings abundant materialgoods and wealth; however, it also brings about such problems as ecologicalenvironment destruction, human individuality loss, consumption alienation, abnormalfondness of pursuing economic growth and etc. On the basis of criticizing mechanicalcollective holism of modernity, the constructive postmodernists, represented byGriffin, creatively put forward the organic holism which fills the blank ofpostmodernism and transcends anthropocentrism and self-centrism of modernity. Thethesis systematically probes the development courses and its connotations of holismfrom historical perspective: holism originates from simple holism in ancient Greek, the ideology of holism implied in Chinese traditional philosophy and mechanicalcollective holism of modernity, and then develops into the later ideological basis oforganic holism in postmodernist science; furthermore, the organic holism, whoseontology is based on Whitehead’s extensive-empiricism, proposed by Griffin, affirmsthe consciousness of experience in nature and science, negates sensible intuitionism ofmodernity and suspects the reliability in obtaining truth by repeated experiments inmodernity. As a new ideological mode different from modernity, Griffin’s organicholism unifies the opposition of science and humanity, regains the status ofsubjectivity in nature and emphasizes the overall ecology of nature, which providesthe ideological guidance for the ecological civilization construction, comprehensivecoordinated and sustainable development of society, comprehensive and freedevelopment of people on the philosophical level. However, Griffin’s organic holismis still limited due to its lack in practice, the mystery of extensive empiricism and thequeries on the scientific basis of organic holism.
