As a limited number class, Chinese preposition is a kind of function wordswhose position in the sentence, grammatical meaning, origin, and usage are all verycomplex. Chinese preposition which is usually a difficult point for nativeEnglish-speaking learners, plays a very important role in Chinese.This thesis chose “在”,“跟”,“对”,“从” which are the most frequently usedChinese preposition for native English-speaking learners as the study subject. Firstthis thesis compares these four prepositions with their corresponding words inEnglish from three aspects of syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. Then it analyzes theusing errors of these prepositions made by students whose mother tongue is English.At last, combining related research findings of teaching Chinese as a foreign language,this thesis raises several teaching methods on Chinese preposition teaching for nativeEnglish-speaking students and presents a simple teaching design on Chinesepreposition “从”. The specific contents are as follows.First, there is the introduction of research motivation and significance, range ofstudy, research methodology, research theory and source of data.Chapter one is the review of previous research findings on Chinese Prepositionsand its error analysis.Chapter two describes meanings of Chinese preposition “在”, and compares itwith its corresponding words in English which are “at, in, on, under” from threeaspects of syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. Besides, this chapter analyzes the usingerrors of “在” made by native English-speaking learners.Chapter three describes meanings of Chinese preposition “跟”, and compares itwith its corresponding word in English “with” from two aspects of syntax andsemantics. Besides, this chapter analyzes the using errors of “跟” made by nativeEnglish-speaking learners.Chapter four describes meanings of Chinese preposition “对”, and compares itwith its corresponding words in English which are “to, of, in, on, with, at, for,towards” from three aspects of syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. Besides, this chapter analyzes the using errors of “对” made by native English-speaking learners.Chapter five describes meanings of Chinese preposition “从”, and compares itwith its corresponding words in English “from” from three aspects of syntax,semantics, and pragmatics. Besides, this chapter analyzes the using errors of “从”made by native English-speaking learners.Chapter six raises several teaching methods on Chinese preposition teaching fornative English-speaking students and presents a simple teaching design on Chinesepreposition “从”.At last, there is a summary of the research results, innovation points anddeficiencies of the thesis.
