In Other Words: a coursebook on translation, authored by Mona Baker, discusses translation studyfrom linguistic perspective, which not only has strong theoretical property, but also has profound guidingsignificance. It adopts the method of bottom-up, discussing from equivalence at word level, to textual anddiscourse level. This task is about the translation of the Sixth Chapter: Textual Equivalence with about12,000words.This report consists of three parts. Chapter one is the content of the translation task. Chapter two isthe translation. Chapter three is the translation report, firstly, it gives a brief introduction of this translationtask, including the selection of the material, the author and the source text, and the significance of the task;secondly, it illustrates the translation process in three stages: preparation work before translation, in theprocess of translation and after translation; finally, it provides a conclusion about this translation task, including the experience gained in the process of the translation and the existing problems for furtherstudy. From this translation practice, I realize that, on the one hand, the translator needs to gain a goodcommand of English and Chinese as well as a solid basis of translation theory; on the other hand, a goodtranslator not only needs extensive knowledge, but also should be able to handle the hard process. Morepractice and continuous learning are the inevitable routes to being a qualified translator.
