This is a project report on the translation of the second chapter of In Other Words——a coursebook ontranslation by Mona Baker.This chapter illustrates how to achieve equivalence at word level, the problems of non-equivalenceand how the translator is able to solve those problems in different situations in the process of translation. Inaddition, it also explains such concepts as lexical meaning, semantic fields, lexical sets, andnon-equivalence, etc.The report includes five parts. Part1presents the background of the original writer and the bookbriefly, pointing out the importance of this translation project. Part2mainly refers to the common problemsexisting in the nowadays translation of foreign academic works. Part3focuses on the key translation theoryrelated to the book. In Part4, the author of this thesis refers to the translation problems encountered in theprocess of translating and the respective translation strategies adopted to solve them by using plenty ofexamples. Part5is a summary of the experience and lessons the translator has obtained through thistranslation project. |
