A Report On The Translation Of History Of Illustration

Translating books of art history from English into Chinese can provide Chinese scholars and students with insights on the development of world art.The Source Text(ST)of this report is History of Illustration,a rigorous textbook published by Bloomsbury Publishing House in 2018.The author of this report has been commissioned by Hubei Fine Arts Publishing House to translate this book which contains 295,344 English words.This real-life publishing project fully meets requirements of MTI training to build translation capacity in practice.Featuring informative and refined language,the ST covers many disciplines and multicultural elements.Therefore,lexical translation in this project is considerably difficult.Significant problems include technical terms in various disciplines,loan words from different languages,and conflicts due to cultural differences.Guided by Mona Baker's theory,the report takes Chapter 21 entitled Wartime Imagery and Propaganda as an example to analyze equivalence at word level.This chapter explores illustrations significant for military history,wartime publicity,and war-related culture.Besides,application of translation tools and resources in this project is also discussed in the present report.The report consists of four parts: Chapter One introduces the background,characteristics,and significance of the translation project.Chapter Two describes the translation process,including pre-translation preparation,actual translating process,and post-translation management.Chapter Three conducts a case analysis,tackling equivalence of technical terms and loan words,and questions beyond equivalence.Chapter Four summarizes findings and unsolved problems,providing visions for future study.
