Based on David Rumal hart’s schema theory, Lv Bi song’s theory of secondlanguage acquisition and Yang hui yuan’s theory of teaching Chinese as a secondlanguage, incorporating research fruits of lexical chunks by George A.Miller, MichaelLewis, James R. Nattinger&Jeanette S. Decarrico, the present thesis investigates theapplication of lexical chunk teaching in listening comprehension course ofintermediate Chinese program. Research is conducted with literature review,questionnaire, comparison and contrast. Research subjects are students atKyrgyzstan-Turkey Manas University and Humanity University whose Chineseproficiency levels range from Level3to Level5. Two questions call for attention.1. How can we improve teaching and its effectiveness of intermediate Chineselistening comprehension course?2. How can we apply lexical chunk teaching method to intermediate Chineselistening comprehension course?Based on comparison and contrast of scores of listening comprehension tests ofthe experimental class and normal class after half a term’s implementation of lexicalchunk teaching, it intends to examine whether it is effective. Then a sample teachingplan of “Lesson Fourteen: Seeking Happiness” in Intermediate Chinese Listening II isprovided to show how lexical chunk teaching is conducted. Research findings are asfollows. First, explanation of lexical chunks before listening familiarize students withthe contents to be listened to, thus diminishing their anxiety before doing listening.Second, learning and using lexical chunks improve students’ comprehension andenable them to grasp core messages of the text. Third, taking notes, retelling anddoing related exercises of lexical chunks help students better understand texts andbuild up their lexical chunks. It is concluded that lexical chunk teaching is a helpfulmethod in intermediate Chinese listening comprehension teaching program at Kyrgyzstan-Turkey Manas University and Humanity University.It’s hoped that thethesis contributes to Chinese teaching in Kyrgyzstan.
