Vocabulary is one of the three important parts of language.Vocabulary to language is just like the foot stones to the buildings.One can not express his or her own ideas or do listening,speaking,reading and writing efficiently without enough vocabulary.Thus,we can know the importance of vocabulary in English teaching.With the revolution of English teaching materials and the publishing of English New Curriculum Standard,association method,situation teaching method,word-building method and so on in English vocabulary teaching are generally accepted by English teachers.Instead,traditional translation teaching method is gradually ignored because it is thought to be conflicting with the goal of developing students' communicating skills.Most English educators think that the best way to English teaching is to put students into pure English environment so that students can develop their language sense.Translation teaching method is considered to be too mechanic,hidebound and forgettable.However,teachers in middle school around me(suining,sichuan province)use translation teaching method to teach vocabulary more or less.In the paper,I use students in junior one in my teaching school as the objects of my study.According to the result of my research,translation teaching method has more good effect on vocabulary teaching than bad effect.By analyzing the characteristics of translation teaching method and English learning and the current situation of middle school students,I draw a conclusion that translation teaching method is not out of style in English teaching.Instead,it has a great effect on students' language applied ability.There are five chapters in this essay.The first chapter is introduction.At first,I show the background of this essay,and put forward the main research questions.At the same time,I conclude the main structure of this essay.The research questions are mainly about: 1.the current situation of vocabulary teaching in middle school;2.under the condition of current educational background,which teaching method is more appropriate for vocabulary teaching in middle school,translation teaching method or direct teaching method?;3.Come up with some useful suggestions about vocabulary teaching in middle school according to these two teaching methods.The second chapter is literature review.It's mainly about the development ?evolution?characteristics andtheoretical basis of translation teaching method and direct teaching method.I present the current teaching and learning situation of vocabulary as well.At last,I introduce Second Language Acquisition Theory of Krashen to provide theoretical foundation of this essay;Chapter three mainly talks about my research.It includes the object of my study,the purpose of my study,the methods of my study,the evaluation criterion of my study.The methods of my study include questionnaire?periodical test and periodical interview;Chapter four is the analysis and summary of my data.I get to know the main problems that exist and the opinions of teachers and students in vocabulary teaching in middle school at the same time.According to the above,I make a conclusion that translation teaching method is more appropriate for vocabulary teaching in middle school and put forward some effective suggestions as well to improve the teaching and learning of vocabulary teaching;Chapter five is the conclusion.I make a conclusion of the whole passage at first,then answer the questions put forward before,summarize the research and point out the shortages in my study.
