In the history of modern Chinese literature, Cheng Fangwu was an important critics. His literary criticism integrated a variety of foreign literary and combined with the Chinese classical literary criticism methods. The theory of criticism and critical practice, which based on "Expression theory","Truth theory","Sympathy Theory" and "Beyond Theory", constitutes the important part of modern literary criticism. Not only enrich the theoretical connotation of the Chinese modern literary criticism history, but also showed the efforts of building Chinese literature theory. At the same time he took a solid step to Chinese literary theory in the process of modern transition.Cheng FangWu’s literary criticism had a variety of academic origin. He focused on various literary during his study in Japan. Therefore, his literary criticism was affected by a variety of literary. Especially the Romanticism, Naturalism, etc, had great effect on the formation of his literary criticism. In addition, Chinese traditional culture resources also had important influence on Cheng FangWu. The Chinese and foreign literature resources made Cheng FangWu’s view of literary criticism have its own unique artistic charm.The theoretical connotation of literary criticism mainly had four aspects. The first point is "Expression theory", from the "self-expression" to "class consciousness". He did not forget the era and society, nor abandoned the rationality and immersed in the performance of emotion. He established his own "Expression theory" with "self and "class","emotional" and "rational". The second point is "Truth theory", including "subjective truth" and "objective reality". Cheng FangWu was more concerned with "subjective truth", but he thought that the "objective" and "subjective" is not absolutely contradictive. So he took a tolerant attitude to era.The third point is "Sympathy Theory""Sympathy" means mutual tolerance and empathetic attitude. Literary critics have to share their feelings. The last point is "Beyond Theory"."Beyond" indicates that the critics should stand in a certain degree, from the established form of criticism. Then "Sympathy Theory" and "Beyond Theory" constitute a unique identification and judgment.Cheng FangWu’s criticism was mainly reflected in poetry and fiction. According to Cheng FangWu’s poetry criticism, commentator finds his views of "New Poetry":"control emotion effectively","create new content and form","poetry is the creation of genius","translation of poetry is poetry". Novel criticism was an important aspect of Cheng FangWu’s literary criticism practice. He believed the novel should have "modern emotion","observation of heart","suggestion and imagination","innovation". Importantly, his practice of literary criticism is mostly consistent with his theory of literary criticism.Cheng FangWu’s view of literary criticism had very important significance to modern literature. First of all, He promoted the development direction of the Creation of Cooperative’s literary criticism. And he played a very important role on the formation and change of the literary concept. Secondly, Cheng FangWu’s non utilitarian literature was particularly valuable to the early nineteen twenties. Finally, He pushed the development of revolutionary literature in the mid to late nineteen twenties. Of course, Cheng FangWu’s literary criticism also have some limitations, such as, part of the literary criticism practice had distance with the theory of literary criticism. Indeed, his ideological trend destroyed his personality criticism in nineteen thirties. But we can’t deny, Cheng FangWu’s literary criticism which emphasized the independent significance of literary criticism still has reference meanings.
