Chinese is profound and extensive. It’s grammatical meaning is diversiform and flexible. Most of thegrammatical functions have to rely on function words. As one of the function word, preposition is flexiblein usage. Even native speakers find it difficult to learn, let alone non-Chinese speaking students."duì" and"duìyú" are not only two important prepositions in Chinese, but also two words which have high error rateamong the non-native speakers. So they are two difficult words in teaching Chinese as a foreign language.Through the research on the use of preposition "duì" and "duìyú" by English-speaking students, wediscover that most of the European and American students understand the basic usage of "duì" and "duìyú",which has a high frequency of use, but they don’t know much about the complex usage of the twoprepositions and the differences with other similar prepositions. So they often make errors when using thetwo prepositions. Thus this thesis explores these errors and their reasons and proposes worthwhile teachingstrategies according to the actual teaching situation in order to reduce the errors of "duì" and "duìyú". Itintends to give some guidance to the actual teaching of Chinese as a foreign language and to promote thepractice of teaching with theoretical research and to improve teaching efficiency.This thesis can be divided into seven parts altogether:The preface introduces the reason for the research, the significances, the scope and the source of thecorpus;Chapter Two discusses the theoretical basis and research methods adopted in the research;Chapter Three discusses the research status of ontology on the preposition "duì" and "duìyú"; Chapter Four summarizes several common types of errors basing on the language data collected;Chapter Five analyzes the cause of errors basing on the data collected;Chapter Six proposes some feasible teaching strategies to reduce errors and to avoid the occurrence ofthe same errors;Chapter Seven summarizes the thesis.
