Interpreting Practice Report For Guide-Interpretation

There is no development for the society without communication. And interpreters play the vital role for communication. When different delegations visited our university, I was their guide interpreter for accompanying them to visit Shaanxi Normal University, Shaanxi History Museum, Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses, the Grand Tang Dynasty Ever-bright City, the City Wall, etc. During the guide-interpretation, I encountered the different interpretation cases. The interpreter should use the flexible methods to deal with them respectively. Therefore, the topic of this thesis is to master the flexibility for the guide-interpretation.My guide-interpretations are under the guidance of "Skopos Theory" which is "the end justifies the means for translation and interpretation." The principles of Skopos Theory,"coherence and fidelity" and "function and loyalty" equipped me to tackle the difficult situations. Because of the culture shocks, there are differences between Chinese culture and exotic culture. I added or omitted some proper information for the foreign friends’better understanding, especially for the unique culture or the obstacle for understanding.The interpretation can be classified for three levels, low level flexibility, appropriate flexibility and high level flexibility interpretation. Guide-interpretation has the high level flexibility because of the changeable situations and flexible atmosphere. This thesis was divided into four chapters for analyzing the flexibility in guide-interpretation in the view of Skopos Theory. It includes the introduction of guide-interpretation, my guide-interpretation process, key study of flexibility in guide-interpretation and the conclusion and feedback for my guide-interpretation. The specific examples can analyze how to master flexibility in guide-interpretation. It’s not only beneficial for my own development, but also can provide some information for other guide interpreters.What’s more, I deeply realized that the interpreters were not only the language, culture exchange person, but also the problem-solving person. Therefore, the interpreters should give response properly for the different cases. They can choose "the complete faithful interpretation","the uncomplete faithful interpretation" and "the complete unfaithful interpretation" respectively according to the specific situations. To face the changeable circumstances, it’s wise for them to select "literal interpretation","literal interpretation with explanation","transliteration","transliteration with explanation","calque","substitution","abridge or abstract interpretation""amplification","humorous ways, to meet psychology needs","analogy and conversion". The writer will list the specific examples one by one to support each of them.To sum up, the flexibility can help the interpreters to achieve their different aims.
