| This translation report was written on the basis of the translation of Rollo on the Atlantic. Rollo on the Atlantic was written for children by American writer Jacob Abbot. The novel was about a special trip across the Atlantic made by Rollo and his sister Jane, without anyone to take care of them. They experienced things like gambling on the steamer, storm on the ocean and losing contact with their parents. The plot of the novel was more of a description of what a child might experience in an ordinary journey than the depict of a special children’s adventure. In the novel the writer also talked a lot about how to improve oneself, how to nourish one’s character as well as how to recognize and avoid bad things. Since the book was written in the19th century, there were a great many things that are no longer appear frequently in our daily life.The translator accepted the task of translating three novels of this series on December,2012. The translation theory of Functional Equivalence was adopted by the translator as guidance to the translation. The Functional Equivalence theory focuses on the equal effect of the text on readers of both sides. In order to achieve the functional equivalence, the similarity on the form can be ignored to certain degree.This translation report made detailed description to the difficulties and solution of the whole process, and analized them with the translation theory. The difficulties in the process of the translation includes understanding obstacles and confusion about certain words and sentences. The solution mainly focus on resolve the difficulties with translation skills, including making complements to sentences, deleting surplus components, dividing long sentences into short ones, combing short sentences into longer ones as well as readjust the order of sentences.The translator had direct experience to the translation of children’s literature because of this translation task, and obtained further understanding to the guidance of the translation theory. |
