A Report On The Translation Of Delta Wedding (Chapter1-2)

This thesis is a translation report on Delta Wedding. Delta Wedding is one of EudoraWelty’s four novels. It paints a vivid and charming portrait of a large southern family, theFairchilds, who live on a plantation in the Mississippi delta. The story, set in1923, isexquisitely woven from the ordinary events of family life, centered around the visit of ayoung relative, Laura and the family’s preparations for her cousin Dabney’s wedding.It consists of four parts. Part One is a brief introduction to the translation task, includingproject profile, the characteristics of the text and the translation strategies (faithfulness,expressiveness and elegance) employed. Part Two is translation process, including thepreparation for the translation, the initial translation and the revision. Part Three is theanalyses of translation cases. Part Four is a summary, which is concerned about the author’sreflections on this translation task.Translation is a synthetic subject, which involves such fields such as society, politics,economics, culture, technology, religion as well. Translation is also an art in which thetranslator should have creativity and learn how to change from these two roles--a painter anda sculptor. After intimating and repairing, the work of art can express the essence of theoriginal work. Therefore translation is more than a simple conversion from one word or asentence to another. It requires some qualifications to be a good translator: a good commandof English and Chinese; a great deal of cultural knowledge and theories; sufficient conscienceas a professional translator.
