In the late Ming Dynasty, there is one outstanding historical figure combinedwith the identity of politician, poet, and dramatist, namely, Ruan Dacheng. As a feudalpolitician, he devotes the whole life to the political struggles. In order to seek fameand interest, Ruan Dacheng does everything he can without considering his reputation, which displays one ugly face of late medieval age. At the same time, being one poetand dramatist, Ruan Dacheng can be viewed as the leading literatus in late MingDynasty. His poems and dramas shape a prosperous Ming Dynasty, especially thelatter producing epoch-making influences on Chinese literature. As for such acharacteristic person, there are more and more diverse researches on him in thechange of times, which results in some difficulties to have a clear image of him. Inthis thesis, with an attitude of respecting the facts, one deep study will be given toRuan Dacheng.Born in a literary family, Ruan Dacheng was affected deeply by such atmosphereand had great talents at an early age. Winning the title as “the most prominent talent inthe south of Yangtze River, Raun Dacheng was in favor of Donglin Party with hispersonality as frankness and bravery. After being one official in the court, he involvedin fierce party struggles. In order to seek the position of minister of Ministry ofPersonnel Affairs, he gave his support to Eunuch Party and offended Donglin Party. With the enthronization of Emperor Chongzhen, he was accused of rebellion andrelegated back home in Naking. In this period, Ruan Dacheng made interactions withvarious native bigwig, sparing no efforts to achieve his aim to return to be one official. At the same time, it is this period that there were lots of works created by him as thewriting of plenty of poems and dramas laid solid foundation for his status as oneliterary master. After start of the reign of Hongguang, Ruan Dacheng got importantposition in the court. However, when reused, he began to become corruption and graft, allied parties, and gave severe revenge to Donglin Party. With the collapse ofHongguang regime, Ruan Dacheng died of illness. In his early life time, Ruan Dacheng is one member of Donglin Party. For the sake of political status, he depends on Eunuch Party. People in subsequent timesdefine Ruan Dacheng as one member of Eunuch Party, which is evidently affected byhimself and also has close relations with behave style of Donglin Party. Progressiveactions, sectarianism, and internal struggles and mutual attacks from different regionsmake great contribution to Ruan Dacheng’s choice to stand by Eunuch Party. Ofcourse, the reason for Ruan Dacheng’s tendency is only for getting one position ofofficial. After realizing this, he instantly divides clear boundary between himself andEunuch Party. As a result, despite his ambiguous links with Eunuch Party, RuanDacheng does not really join this party while is labeled as this mark for offendingDonglin Party. Throughout his life, Ruan Dacheng seeks political development in thecourt and gets close to various sides by means of his political talent and literaryaccomplishment whenever he is in position or become idle at home because ofinvolvement so that the setup of Southern Ming Dynasty is in the charge of him.As one feudal politician and handler of Southern Ming, affected by family, region and social morality, Ruan Dacheng falls into the swirl of political struggles inhis life and can not get rid of it, which means “one road of no return”.
