A Report On English-Chinese Translation Of Industrial Equipment Manuals

With the rapid development of economy in China and strengthening of international exchange, an increasing number of the advanced industrial equipments are imported into China so that the translation of these equipment manuals becomes much more important. Industrial equipment manual belongs to practical writing, which determines its translation must be accurate and objective, and meanwhile as a branch of EST, it is full of terminologies and professional knowledge. Therefore, its translation requires translators to possess solid professional knowledge and strong ability to translate the manuals into a target text in high quality.This report is written based on the translation practice of translating these equipment manuals including gas analyzing systems and burners that both belong to practical writings. In the process of translation, the linguistic features of industrial equipment manuals should be attached importance to and follow the principles of manuals translation.Due to the features of the source text, the translation can be guided by the Skopos theory and its three subordinate rules, that is, the Skopos rule, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule. That is to say, when translating these industrial equipment manuals, the translator has to take the target text receivers who are mostly the technicians in the industry into consideration so that an exact and consice target text is necessary for these technicians to understand.With the guidance of the Skopos theory, the writer in this report concludes some linguistic features of industrial equipment manuals and several translation techniques of words and sentences in the report after analyzing and translating. In spite of some shortcomings led by the unprofessionalism, there still exists many unsolved problems. The writer of this report, however, hopes that it can be of some help for the readers.
