Along with the continuous development of our country’s economy and theunceasing deepening reform in cultural sector, the developmental level of China’sdocumentaries has gotten certain improvement and starts to be geared tointernational standards, especially under the condition of “cultural developmentand prosperity”. Since the7-episode documentary, A Bite of China, had beenbroadcasted in the column of “Charm&Records” in CCTV-1from Mid-May in2012, it became the national heatedly discussed topic quickly so that nothing canbe compared with the then “heat of gourmet” and “heat of tongue tip”, which wasbrought by the documentary. This thesis focuses on the comprehensive analysis ofA Bite of China from the perspective of culture and emotion, audio-visual language,narrative strategy and marketing by using the research techniques of literatureresearch method, textual analysis method and case study method and so on. It aimsto summarize the documentary’s principal factors to success and its inspiration forthe future development of our national documentaries.The thesis includes five charters which can be divided into three parts.:The first part concludes Introduction and Chapter One, which mainly presentsthe research purposes as well as the research methods of this thesis and givespreliminary interpretation of the author’s understandings of documentaries.The second part is the highlights of this thesis which contains Chapter Two,Chapter Three and Chapter Four. This part is the concrete analysis on A Bite ofChina. Chapter Two analyzes the documentary from the angle of culture andemotion. In A Bite of China, food conveyed the essence of Chinese traditionalculture and Chinese people’s affection, while the documentary successfully madefood become the isotopic carrier of Chinese traditional culture and the bailment of Chinese people’s emotion. Therefore, the thesis concludes that one of the reasonsfor the success of this documentary lies in that it arouses audiences’ culturalacceptance and emotional resonance. Chapter Three analyzes A Bite of China fromits audio-visual language and narrative strategy. By adopting defamiliarized visualappearance and dramatized narrative strategy, the documentary withheldaudiences’ points of interest so that it gained better propagation effects. ChapterFour analyzes the documentary from the point of marketing. It mainly explains thecurrent marketing environment of our national documentaries and points out thegreat achievements that A Bite of China has won in marketing.Finally, part three is the conclusion part of this thesis which consists ofChapter Five and Conclusion. This part indicates the future developing direction ofour national documentaries.The success of A Bite of China has promoted the social influence andinternational impact of our national documentaries, which also sets a good examplefor the future development of our national documentaries.
