Killing cattle ritual which is the buyi traditional customs of funeral ceremony, is a praying ceremony for the souls of the dead in buyi ethnic group, and it is a relatively primitive, traditional and complete system of praying ceremony. Buyi is an ethnic group who own a language but no words; however, they played it with native language over the funeral ceremony. By means of observing in community, with regarding a killing cattle ceremony as main clue, and the author will show a panorama to readers through analyzing the whole process of killing cattle ceremony on the longitudinal time, and will give cultural interpretation with some examples on the transversal time. The thesis which appears in the form of ethnography show readers buyi culture, enhance the understanding among ethnic groups and promote national unity from the interpretation of the cultural significance and function of the ceremony.Son-in-law was a leading role in the ceremony, and regarded his personal life clue as the main line, and eventually cut off the chain of their debts and relations with the dead. It has multiple functions which are interaction, cultural inheritance, ethnic identity, collective memory and the reconstruction of power. It is a primitive religious beliefs, a reflection of the world view and cosmology view, and contain the in-laws human relations. It is an indispensable important element to constitute buyi culture.Buyi ancestors have constantly absorbed different culture to enrich their own cultural system. They still have kept their own characteristics of buyi ethnic group even they accepted the praying ceremony of Chinese culture. And they have played in parallel with two kinds of funeral ceremony in order to send dead off. People were eager to get huge force of conquering nature though worship of ancestors. With the changing of buyi’s customs, beliefs and language environment, bumo who is a president for playing the traditional funeral ceremony will encounter a dilemma for training successor.
