Morality plays a vital role in the development of society, it control humanconsciousness then regulate the relationship between people and people, man and society.China is a long history nation, it formed the traditional morality after a thousand yearsprecipitation. In modern times, the continuous influx of Western culture and ideology, newmorality constantly impact on the traditional moral. With the deepening of reform andopening policies, social contradictions are intensified. The civic-minded indifference tomoney worship and then the issue of integrity in business, and all of these reflects moraldeficiency in the society. At the same time we have to realize that this is not formedmomentary. From the Opium War, our people began to suffer oppression of nationalsovereignty, which severely impact the country’s traditional morality. From the Opium Warto the May Fourth Movement, the traditional morality and ethics formed the westernfactions battle. During this period thinkers engaged in a fierce debate around the Chinesetraditional moral and western moral.In this paper, we choose the Western moral and tradition moral in May FourthMovement as the research object, we referred to the historical background and cultures oftwo moral, then discussed about the nature of moral, ethical inheritance, moral type, andmoral construction, described the main contents of the moral controversy in May FourthMovement. What’s more, we analyzed the impact of the results of this moral controversyon the formation of the modern moral system, in particular it laid the foundation in thespread of Marxism new moral in Modern China. Finally, we summarized the contributionof the moral controversy in May Fourth Movement to structure a socialist harmoniousculture. We proposed establishing a correct attitude towards traditional culture and Westernculture can be conducive to the moral transformation of modern society.
