Ang Lee’s Films And The Intercultural Communication

In the wake of the birth and development of capitalist society in the modern times,thehistory began the transition to the world history, and then the globalization began. As a result，thecommunications between different cultural groups become more and more frequently. Since1980s, because of the speeding pace of globalization, the intercultural communication becameone of the surface features of the modern society.Nowadays,the role intercultural communication has played in the wave of globalization ismore and more important, therefore the attention on it is also became more and more. In thiscontext, the obstacles encountered in the practice of intercultural communication also causewidespread concern and deeply excavation in the academic circle. However, subject to thecomplexity of intercultural communication itself, the existing practical experiences andtheoretical studies still can not provide a perfect idea about how to circumvent thecommunication barriers between different cultural groups effectively.Due to some certain characteristics of itself, films show huge advantages in the field ofintercultural communication, that to say, the film can be named the messenger of theintercultural communication. In this context, analyzing and summarizing the worthycharacteristics some films have showed in the practice of intercultural communication maybeprovide some effective reference for the intercultural communication practice.Ang Lee enter the film industry in1990s. The intertwined multicultural landscapes that helived make his directorial works have some distinctive intercultural attributes. Meanwhile，thesuccess that Ang Lee’s films have achieved around the world can show that the films has somegood qualities in the intercultural communication. This paper bases on the text analysis，at thesame time，the author take use of the combining methods of case studies and comparative studyto analyze the feasibility of the intercultural communication, and summarize the beneficialpractices that Ang Lee’s films have tried to get good word of mouth and box office success underthe background of globalization through interpreting the images of the films，thus reveal theenlightenments that Ang Lee’s films have showed on the intercultural communication.The multicultural background that Ang Lee have experienced in his growth progress makehimself have some unique advantages during the intercultural communication, however, theChinese and Western production model and team make it possible that Ang Lee can combine thestrengths of Eastern and Western culture as well as possible. In this context, his films also can getthe logical rationality when they are put into the foreign culture. In some sense, Ang Lee’s filmshelp the Chinese culture and the Western culture have a settlement, and he even created someabsolutely new cultural patterns which beyond the established boundaries between differentcultures to a certain extent but adapt to the people from different cultures. So that, studying onAng Lee’s films from the perspective of the intercultural communication can make somesignificant senses not only for aggrandizing the practice of intercultural communication but alsofor expanding the academic horizons.
